Playing Stump The Band

After being a member of the staff team for eight and a half years, it has become harder to stump me.  Over the years I’ve benefited from conversations with longtime volunteers, donors, staff and community members.  I’m proud to hold this institutional knowledge.
So, imagine my surprise to see our agency name pop up in a news article about then-candidate Charniele Herring’s background.  As the article explains, she was a VISTA volunteer here at GSHFS.  I knew we’d had VISTAs in the past, but never knew any specific names. 
I’m thrilled to know her connection to our work and mission.  And, I look forward to a trip to the General Assembly this coming Monday, where I can shake her hand congratulating her on the new role as Delegate.  Maybe then, or after hustle of her first session ends, I can get her up to speed on what’s happened in the decade or so since she was last here.

I just hung up the phone with a cohort of mine.  She runs a local nonprofit and has become a good friend.  Amid much turmoil in her personal life, I have offered to provide her a few hours of respite, caring for a sick relative while she has some time away to rest and recouperate.  

Our GSHFS offices are closed today and tomorrow, and I now realize how that respite from my routine is also important.  Situations look a little different when you have distance from them.  Sure, this is a busy time of year for me.  However, with healthy perspective I may just be more effective because of my time away.

1st Financial Ed Class of the Year!

With an impressive twenty five families in attendance, Good Shepherd Housing kicked off the New Year with its first budget class of 2009. Facilitated by volunteer budget counselor – Jim Stevens, the standing room only crowd was introduced to an overview of the history of credit reporting covering such topics as: How to Obtain a Credit Report, Aspects of Credit Scoring, Credit Dispute Methods and the new Credit Rules implemented as of January 2009. Mr. Stevens’ personal antidotes about his own credit and financial struggles encouraged lively discussions and several questions from the audience.

For the children in attendance, Theresa Evans and Kathryn Coneway from ART AT THE CENTER were on hand to channel their energy into clay and various other art materials.
