The Word of the Day is... Transparency

You will hear it time and again on the radio, television and on the Internet. Agencies, whether public or private, need to be more "transparent". This implies openness, communication, and most importantly, accountability. The non-profit sector has long held this value as important. One of the symbols of this effort is the financial audit report conducted at the end of every fiscal year that is made available to the public-at-large.

Here at Good Shepherd Housing we like to share our annual report with our supporters. You can view it on our website here. As you can see in the report, our administrative costs are below 10%, which is exceptional for the social services sector. What this means, we are proud to say, is that more of your money goes to help the people in your community and fulfill the Good Shepherd Housing mission. We thank you so much, especially during the holiday season, for your continued commitment and donations.

There is no persuasiveness more effectual than the transparency of a single heart, of a sincere life. -- Joseph B. Lightfoot

If you are prone to leading, what happens when you are put in a group comprised entirely of leaders? I’m going to find out!

Yesterday I met with a project team from the Emerging Leaders Institute (an initiative of Leadership Fairfax). The seven member team has a variety of skill sets they bring to the table. Together, this group will tackle a community service project over the next 8 months. Considering their talent and energy, I bet they can achieve more than anyone expects at the outset.

Oh, and my role - - to sit quietly as a facilitator, making sure they remain on track. I’m not supposed to be a direct participant. Who knew being disengaged could be so much work? It took a lot of energy for me to remain in the background just listening.

So, here’s to the Red Team, and a successful experience. I wish them well.

Gala Season has begun! Every year one of our board members hosts a Gala Kick-Off Lunch. Even though our Gala isn't until April 5, 2008, we begin working on it months in advance. Actually, more like a year in advance. At the kick-off lunch, board members, staff and volunteers all gather to discuss the Gala and strategies for making it a success. I must admit, I love the Gala. It is tons of work, but so much fun. There are so many working on the event that I find it all very inspiring. Many in the community rally around GSH, showing their support - from event sponsors to college intern volunteers. Gala season has begun!
