Man With A Microphone

OK, don’t let the photo fool you. I have yet to hear Fr. Gerry Creedon play the mandolin, but I have heard him speak several times. Each time, he amazes me!

Earlier today Fr. Creedon was honored by the Human Service Coalition of Northern Virginia for his advocacy work promoting justice and equality across northern Virginia. Even while accepting an award, he uses the moment to convey and idea and call people to action. It just seems natural.

I wonder if it has always been that way for him? I hear many other people speak, and their message may be factual and even impressive, but it doesn’t always hit. What is it that makes people effective? I hope to find out and begin to incorporate some of those lessons into my efforts for Good Shepherd Housing.

So, hat’s off to Fr. Gerry Creedon! Know that I am studying you, and trying to glean some tips on conveying a message with passion and power.

Asleep

“Shhhh…,” said the front desk volunteer to me in a soft voice. As I walked by her toward the front door, she pointed to one of the couches in our reception area, and I understood. Lying in complete slumber was an adorable young toddler. He was obviously peaceful. His mother was nearby talking to Gloria, our Director of Emergency Services, about receiving assistance to prevent an eviction.

The more I think about it, the more that scene makes sense. It is what our work and mission is meant to do - - prevent homelessness without launching the family into upheaval. The mother engaged us as a resource to help achieve stability, all the while keeping her family on as even of a keel as possible. It is a great feeling!
